With the increased demand for American Silver Eagles, there has been a concurrent rise in interest for American Proof Silver Eagle Proof coins. Proof Silver Eagle coins are a collectible version of the silver bullion coin released by the United States Mint. In the past, Proof coins have sold out quickly soon after release, and with only a limited number of coins in production each year, that could happen again this year.

The model for the obverse of the U.S. Mint's bullion and proof Silver Eagle is one of the most popular of American patterns, the Walking Liberty Silver Half-Dollar. Does a 1986 American Eagle Silver Dollar increase in value as time goes on? ?

Someone offered me $22 for a proof 1986 American Eagle silver dollar that I own, mint in velvet box with certificate of authenticity. I've been doing my home work on this and they usually sell for around that price, I think it's fair. What I'm wondering is, is it worth selling now for $22 or would it increase in value as time goes on?

For that matter, does any one know if the same applies for an 1883 Morgan Dollar?

How To Invest In Silver

Silver has recently experienced some renewed interest as a precious metals investment. Earlier this year, the price of silver exceeded the $20 per ounce level. This marked a twenty seven year high, but was still short of its all time high above $50 per ounce reached in 1980. In recent months, the price of silver has declined below the $10 level, but that has only seemingly intensified investment interest in the metal. There are a variety of methods for making an investment in silver.

The most common method for investing in silver is through government issued bullion coins. The two most popular choices are the American Silver Eagle issued by the United States and the Silver Maple Leaf issued by Canada. These coins are issued by the governments and contain one ounce of silver and are distributed through a network of authorized dealers. The coins can be purchased for a set premium above the precious metals value. The premium generally covers the cost of manufacturing and distributing the coins plus government and dealer profit margins. Depending on the coins, there may also be a numismatic premium attached if the coins are considered to be collectible. Recently, premiums for Silver Eagles and Silver Maple Leafs have expanded as demand has grown.

A second, related method for investing in silver is through generic silver rounds. These are usually privately minted coins with various designs. In some cases, even custom designs can be ordered. Each round usually contains one ounce of silver. Silver rounds have much smaller premiums above precious metal cost as compared to Silver Eagles and Silver Maple Leafs.

Prior to 1964, the United States minted dollars, half dollars, quarter dollars, and dimes in 90% silver. After 1964, certain coins were minted in 40% silver. Some people choose to invest in silver by purchasing bulk lots of 90% or 40% silver coins. If the coins have little collectible value, they are referred to as junk silver. Junk silver is generally purchased in bags containing $1,000 face value of coins. For 90% silver coins this equates to 715 ounces of silver. There are some benefits of buying junk silver. First, although the coins supposedly have no collectible value, a thorough search through the coins may prove otherwise. Second, the coins are considered legal tender and have a floor value of the $1,000 face value.

A less common,
1000
but increasingly popular method for investing in silver is through 100 ounce or 1,000 ounce silver bars. In the past, this has been the way to purchase silver with the lowest premium above the precious metal value. This dynamic has changed in recent months, with 100 ounce bars sometimes carrying premiums of 40% above the market price of silver. Premiums for 1,000 ounce bars have also expanded, but not as dramatically.

A final method for investment can be accomplished through an electronically traded fund or ETF. The Silver ETF allows individuals to invest in the precious metal without physically purchasing and storing it using one of the methods explained above. Instead shares of the ETF can be purchased in a brokerage account. Each share of the ETF represents a predetermined amount of silver less annual custodial expenses. As shares of the ETF are issued or redeemed, silver is bought or sold from a trust. In theory, the price of the Silver ETF should track the price of the physical metal.

It is no wonder why the American Silver Eagle coins are widely sought after and have come to be extremely valuable. Over the past two years, this annually released coins' production has been reduced in its varieties available or completely halted. The 2008 uncirculated coins sold over 444,000 before it's production to purchase them separately was ended. Instead they were only available in an United States Mint Annual Uncirculated Dollar coin Set. This set included the uncirculated Eagle along with four 2008 uncirculated $1 President coins commemorating presidents James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. It additionally came with a 2008 Sacagawea Golden Dollar.

In 2009, it was first announced that the 2009 proof and uncirculated Eagle versions were going to be temporarily suspended. However, some time after it was announced that rather than them being temporarily put on hold, they were not going to be produced at all. This was due to the availability of silver bullion. According to the United States Mint, public law requires that United States American Silver Eagle bullion coins are produced in quantities that meet public demand. The demand for bullion coins has been so great that the silver bullion banks are being used to produce those coins.

The growing popularity of the American Silver Eagles are evident. In 1985 Congress authorized the American Eagle Bullion Program. The American Eagle Bullion Program passed law that silver and gold bullion coins would be produced and guaranteed by the United States government. Hence, buyers could be reassured that the coins' weight, content and purity was secured by the government when they made their purchases. It is also protected by law that the American Eagles can be used to fund Investment Retirement Accounts.

Despite the fact that the American Eagles are a secure investment, the coins are also an absolute beauty with stunning artistry. For these coins, the beloved design of the Walking Liberty created by Adolph A. Weinman is used. This breath-taking design was first used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1917 to 1947. The opposing side has a symbol of the strength of the United States with a heraldic eagle and shield designed by John Mercanti. The American Silver Eagle coins are made of .999 pure silver, weighing one troy ounce. They also have a trace amount of copper to increase the coins durability.

For those interested in purchasing the American Silver Eagle coin, they can be found through sellers that are authorized by the United States Mint. These coins are not available directly to the public. The Eagles can be purchased separately, in individual 20-coin rolls or in "Monster Boxes". "Monster Boxes" are green boxes that have 25 tubes of 20 coin rolls. When purchasing by roll, the buyer will find the rolls have a distinctive green top with the seal of the United States Treasury. Which ever way one determines he or she will purchase the coins, the premium cost per coin will always be less when purchased in bulk versus individually.
